How to Get a Travel Visa

by Emily Retherford, Demand Media

Overview

The United States doesn't require that US citizens have a visa to travel to other countries; however, it may be required by the country to which you are traveling. It's important to check what documents are required before planning any international travel so that you are not deported, and your passport is not confiscated.

Step 1
Research whether or not you need a visa to travel to the country you'd like to visit. The US Department of State has a complete list of countries, and the entry/exit documents required for travel. Check the US Department of State's website to view the list. You can also contact the US embassy or consulate for that specific country via phone.

Step 2
Obtain a passport. In order to receive a visa a passport is required. The time you have the passport before a visa is issued varies, depending on the country to which you wish to travel. However, there are numerous countries that require you to have a passport at least six months before a visa is issued.

Step 3
Obtain the information you need to apply for the visa. This information can be obtained by either calling the embassy or consulate, or by visiting the foreign embassy's website. If obtaining the information via the Internet, print the application.

Step 4
Fill out the application and prepare the other items you need. In addition to filling out the visa application, you are required to pay for the visa. Some countries also require a self addressed stamped envelope to be included, so they can mail your visa back to you.

Step 5
Mail or hand deliver the required documents to the appropriate foreign embassy or consulate. The address to mail documentation is located on the embassy or consulate's website. However, some countries require the documentation to be hand delivered, and will not accept applications by mail.
